Iran Plans To Launch 'Islamic Google Earth' In 4 Months
| Friday, April 12, 2013:
Accusing Google Earth of
being 'zonist' and a spy tool of west, Iran's Ministry for information
and communications technology has announced to launch its own 3D mapping
services. The service will be named 'Bashir' which is a Persian
translation of 'spectator' and Islamic Republic's authorities are hoping
to launch it within 4 months. Iran's minister for information and communications technology, Mohammad Hassan Nami said that Google Earth as a service provider is just a disguise and the technology is actually being used by security and intelligence organisations. |
It is anticipated that Iran can start this map with the controversial 'Persian Gulf'. Last year in May, Iran announced to file a suit against Google Earth for not marking the 'Persian Gulf' on world map. It was after this incidence that Iran announced to move out of the global Internet and build their own intranet by 2013. Iran also tried to block YouTube and Gmail, which was later restored due to public protest.
Prior to Google Earth, Iran has already launched its state-run alternatives to YouTube named 'Mehr' and a National Emailing service.
It will be interesting to see if this 3D Mapping system 'Bashir' will come up as Google Earth's Islamic competitor.
